what is bridge
Bridge is a card game...
Played by four players, in two partnerships, using a standard pack of cards.

  • Bridge is a partnership game - two people making up the partnership.

  • The order of the four suits are - Spades, Hearts, Diamonds and Clubs with the Ace as the highest card and the 2 the lowest.

  • It is a trick taking game - each player contributes one card and the highest card played wins the trick. (So four cards make one trick).

  • The game is played in two distinct different parts - Firstly, we bid at the auction, to decide how many we think we can make. Secondly, then the play of the hand, to attempt to win the number of tricks for which we bid. Our opponents, of course, try to prevent us from winning the specified number of tricks and therefore defeat the contract.

The game of bridge is often referred to as Rubber Bridge (normally played in the home) or Duplicate Bridge which is played in Clubs.

Bridge can be played at many levels, local clubs, congresses, state, national and international. Essentially bridge requires little more than an understanding of how to value a hand and how the cards should be played. At our club level a player cannot hope to compete with the full-time professional of the game, but you can still enjoy the social interaction between the contestants.

Bridge is a game that can be played at any age, but remember the most notable comment expressed by beginners is "why didn't I start 10 years ago". This comment applies irrespective of the age you start. The earlier, the better.
